HOW DO YOU FOLLOW GOD?
I imagine, that we’ve all probably heard at one time or another, someone speak about following God.
Some say they have been following him for years, while others might say, they have only recently began following him. Which begs the question; How Do You Follow God?
Where is He? Where is He going? Is there some sort of a map involved? Has a personal guide been provided to show us the way? Will there be signs indicating how far we have to travel to reach the desired destination?
Seekers like you and I have so many questions. Maybe one of the first one’s that would need to be answered is; Why should I follow God? To answer this, let’s try applying the same logic for why we would want to follow anyone. Perhaps one of the reasons you would want to follow someone is if you’re lost. You find yourself in unchartered or unfamiliar territory and you don’t know where you are going. So you might choose to follow someone.
Another situation might be when you don’t know what to do, which way to turn? Many of us might consider asking someone for guidance that we think could help us.
Or it might be that you are just tired, we’ve gotten exhausted by the journey of never ending roadblocks, detours and rerouting because of something we didn’t know about, and we’re willing to follow someone, anyone, who could lead us to our destination.
Okay, but Why Follow God?
God created us. No one knows us better than he does. If we’re going to trust anyone to offer guidance or direction to us, then God would certainly qualify to be a great choice. We have a direct quote from him on this; “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you”
That sounds very convincing, but let’s put it to the test.
God I don’t know the way to happiness, which way should I go? God I’m not sure which choice to make will you help me? God I’m struggling with some things and I don’t know where to turn. It has been said many times that men refuse to ask for directions. If you don’t ask for direction you will never get direction.
If you have ever followed someone, you know how important it is to stick close. To Follow God, we must surely stick CLOSE. Close to what he says, and close to how he does.
When we decide to Follow God; that means he goes first. Hence that’s the only way we can follow him, is if he’s in front of us. He’s first! We’re not leading he is. Following is not about being in agreement with the leader. It’s about submitting to their guidance and direction. Why? Because we have made a decision to trust them.
Another tip for following someone is to not allow anything to get in between you and who you are following. Don’t allow something to block your view of who you are following. Following God is no different. Some might wonder; how can anything block the view of God? God is huge! Isn’t God too big for anything to block the view of him?
The sun is 100 times larger than planet earth. Yet you can block the view of it with your hand. Which proves it doesn’t take something big to block your view. Ok, let’s say we agree to follow God, where do we begin?
To give us an idea of where to begin, I looked into how a private detective would follow someone and this is what I found.
First, the detective would study who they are following. Research them and try to get to know them and their tendencies.
Then, they would memorize the features of who they were following as to recognize them in different situations and settings. This would keep them from being fooled when things look different than what they think.
Next, when following someone, always make sure to keep them in your sight. Not allowing anything to block your view while still yet maintaining a fair distance of separation. This is done to not and try and predict or guess at what could happen, but to stay behind and just follow.
Lastly, I found that a good detective or good follower is always alert and attentive to who they are following. To follow means to go after, or go behind someone in the same direction they are going.
